A closer look at a marginalized test method: Self-assessment as a measure of speaking proficiency

چکیده

Abstract Second language (L2) teachers may shy away from self-assessments because of warnings that students are not accurate self-assessors. This information stems meta-analyses in which self-assessment scores on average did correlate highly with proficiency test results. However, researchers mostly used Pearson correlations, when polyserial could be used. Furthermore, today can computer adaptive. With them, nonlinear statistics needed to investigate their relationship other measurements. We wondered, if we explored the between and using more robust measurements (polyserial correlation, continuation-ratio modeling), would find different results? had 807 L2-Spanish learners take a computer-adaptive, L2-speaking ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview – (OPIc). The correlated at .61 (polyserial). Using modeling, found each unit increase OPIc scale was associated 131% odds passing thresholds. In words, student likely move higher subsections they rating. computer-adaptive appropriate for low-stakes L2-proficiency measurements, especially cost-effective, make intuitive sense learners, promote learner agency.

A closer look at creativity as search

Several papers by Wiggins (building on ideas by Boden) have outlined a view of creative concept generation as a very general search process, but that formalisation has not been developed much in the past few years. Also, there are some aspects where clarification or spelling out of details would be useful. We present a re-formulation of the central ideas in Wiggins’s framework, with slightly mo...

A Closer Look at Preduction

In a recent paper Jun Arima formalises the idea of preduc-tion { a non-monotonic schema providing a common basis for inductive and analogical reasoning. We examine some of the implications of this schema, as well as its connections with prototypes and conceptual spaces. A generalised version of his schema is motivated and developed to address diiculties with asymmetry and disjuncts.

A Closer Look at HMAC

Bellare, Canetti and Krawczyk [BCK96] show that cascading an ε-secure (fixed input length) PRF gives an O(εnq)-secure (variable input length) PRF when making at most q prefix-free queries of length n blocks. We observe that this translates to the same bound for NMAC (which is the cascade without the prefix-free requirement but an additional application of the PRF at the end), and give a matchin...
